Irene M. (Vandzura) Bandzuh

Bandzuh, Irene M., 92, of Portage passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 1, 2019 in the same home where she was born. Born on August 2, 1926, in Jamestown, Portage Township, the daughter of Andrew and Anna (Gladis) Vandzura. Preceded in death by parents, husband John, son David, and brothers and sisters: Anna, Andris, Phillip, Andrew, Pauline, Elmer, John, Leona and Ethel. Irene is survived by her children: Franceska, wife of Leonard Norwich, Kathleen, wife of Thomas Gaudlip, John, married to the former Elena Chippie, Thomas and fiancée Mary Ann Pollock, Rosemary, wife of Kevin Mallik, and Marianne, wife of Jim Sobota; grandchildren John (J.T.), Alyssa, Lauren, and Nicole Bandzuh; step grandchildren Brittany and Christopher Sobota and step great granddaughter, Arabella. She is also survived by her brother, Tom Vandzura and numerous nieces and nephews. Irene was devoted to her family, faith, and friends. Irene was employed by List restaurant, the Feather Factory, both of Altoona, General Electric, Billings Hardware, Jones News Agency and Mainline Pharmacy. She was a member of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Altar and Rosary Society, choir, and the church social committee. She was also a member of the Portage Community Choir. Irene was proud of her Slovak heritage and traveled to Slovakia with her family in 2008 to visit her relatives. Irene enjoyed cooking, baking, canning, and letter writing. Friends received from 6-8 pm Saturday,  2-4 pm and 6-8 pm Sunday at the Serenko-Claar Funeral Home, PC, 812 Main Street, Portage, Pa 15946 where vigil for the deceased will be held at 4 pm on Sunday. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 am Monday at Holy Family Parish, 509 Caldwell Ave., Portage. Father Tom Stabile, TOR and Monsignor John R. Sasway are the con-celebrants. Committal will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Crichton McCormick Park, PO Box 293, Portage, Pa 15946 or to People Helping People c/o Holy Family Church, 509 Caldwell Avenue, Portage Pa 15946.
