George Petney Sr. Obituary

George Petney Sr., 93, Portage, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 10, 2020, at Cambria Care Center in Ebensburg. He was born on March 31, 1927 in Portage, son of the late John Sr. and Anna (Kushner) Petney.

George was preceded in death by his loving wife Dolly (Cummings) Petney on April 28, 2009, after 50 years of marriage, Brothers; John Jr, Joseph, Michael, Andrew, Sisters; Mary and Margaret. George was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by daughters, Karen, wife of Carl Yusko, Portage; Trina, wife of Jeff Westrick, Ebensburg; Sons, George Jr., Portage; David, Beaverdale; Grandchildren; Stacy and Kelly Yusko, and Jenna and Jason Westrick. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

George was a proud U.S WWII Navy Veteran. He was the owner of Petney’s Garage on Spring Hill in Portage for many years, before retiring and passing down the business to his son George Jr. Anyone that knew George, knew that his family and grandkids were the highlight of his life. He never missed a sporting event, a special occasion, or family dinner alongside them. He also enjoyed spending numerous hours caring for his garden, which he was very proud of, picking blueberries and mushrooms, and canning tomatoes and peaches up until last year. He enjoyed spending time talking with friends, weekly breakfast with Gary Baudoux and coffee with Bill Offman. He was an avid deer hunter and Pittsburgh Steelers fan, and loved going with his grandkids to the Ranger for ice cream. George was a member of the VFW, Amvets, and American Legion. At the age of 71, one of his proud accomplishments was restoring the Army tank, which is currently displayed at the Portage American Legion.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to everyone who provided cards, prayers and support during George’s stay at UPMC Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh and Cambria Care Center in Ebensburg. Also thank you to Cambria Care Center and Grane Hospice Care.

Honoring George’s wishes, there will be no viewing or visitation. Interment will be held privately at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Blue Knob at a later date. Military Rites by the Portage Ritual Team.
