Calaba, George "Arnie", 82, passed away October 13, 2024 in Altoona. Born December 17, 1941 in Portage, the son of George "Jerry" and Catherine "Katie" (Skurkey) Calaba. Deceased family members include his parents, and sister Evon (Calaba) Astleford. Survived by daughter, Marydonna (Calaba) Ravasio, Pittsburgh and son, George Arnold Calaba, Jr., and daughter-in-law Amy (Staib) Calaba, Center Valley and grandchildren Isabel Calaba in Tampa, Anthony Ravasio in Dallas, Katie Ravasio in Chicago/Rome, Helena Calaba in Pittsburgh, and Elijah Calaba in Stroudsburg. Arnie was a graduate of Portage area high school. He then attended some college at both Penn State main and Lock Haven. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He was in the army from 1964 until 1965, during the Vietnam era. The last job he held was with the Biotest company as a courier of blood products. During the pandemic, his job was discontinued. His hobbies included fishing, following Pittsburgh sports teams, playing basketball in his younger years, a staunch Pro-Life supporter, and staying in almost daily contact with his children and grandchildren. He was a proud supporter of their high schools, colleges, and armed forces by representing each with wearing a ball cap, depending on who he was visiting. Friends received 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Serenko-Claar Funeral Home, PC, Portage. Funeral Mass Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Family Parish. Fr. Matthew Reese, celebrant. Committal in Saint Mary's Cemetery, Portage. Military rites by The Portage Ritual Team. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to be sent to the Carmelite Monastery.
