Mary (Raptosh) Vrabel

Vrabel, Mary, 97, passed away November 19, 2019 at The Winds, Duncansville. Born July 9, 1922 in Benscreek, the daughter of George and Barbara (Birka) Raptosh. Deceased family members include her parents, husband Nicholas Vrabel, brothers Michael, John and infant Nicholas Raptosh; sisters Ann Ryan, Helen Brousell, Ethel Williams and infant Mary Raptosh. Survived by children Marianne, wife of Daniel Kelley, New Hampshire; Eileen, wife of Gary Datsko, Geistown and Nicholas, married to the former Catherine Franey, Altoona. She will be sadly missed by her grandchildren Christine (Brandon) Zlupko, Nicholas (Jessica) Vrabel, Jessica (Ryan) Forlina and Brian Kelley and great-grandchildren Collin, Lucas, Nathan, Anthony, Sydney, Alex, Meghan, and Peyton. Sister of Attorney George Raptosh, married to the former Rosalind (Lehmier); Richland. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. During WWII, Mary worked in a defense plant in New Jersey and later served as a Democrat Committee woman for 16 years. She was an office holder in the former United Society's Lodge. She volunteered as part of the kitchen crew at her church parish doing caterings for many years. She was a member of the Greek Catholic Union District 4. Mary was also an active member in the Portage Senior Center for many years. Friends received from 4-8 p.m. Friday at the Serenko-Claar Funeral Home, PC, Portage. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Ss. Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church, Portage. Fr. James Spontak, celebrant. Committal in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Portage Library, the Portage Senior Center or the Portage Historical Society.
