Eugene Scott (Tom) Lengel, 54, of Altoona passed away after an extended illness on October 28, 2018 at The Grove nursing home in Greenville, PA. He was born on December 24, 1963, the youngest child of Eugene L. Lengel and Joan (Fitzgerald) Lengel Burford. Known as “Tom” by family and close friends, he grew up in Mercer. After graduating from Portage High School in 1981, he enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany for several years. Upon receiving an honorable discharge, he returned to Mercer and later lived in several places including Greenville, Clarion, Portage, and finally Altoona where he worked for Newborn Enterprises Inc. Tom will be sadly and deeply missed by family and friends. He is survived by loved ones including his father and stepmother Geraldine (Fry) Lengel; sisters Debora (Jeffrey) Bishop of Canfield, Susan (Peter) Keenahan of Ireland, and Rebecca Lengel of Indiana; and William Byrd of Clarion, his life partner of many years. He also leaves two nieces, three nephews, three aunts, two uncles and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother, his maternal and paternal grandparents and three stepbrothers. A private service for family and friends will be held to celebrate his life at 11 a.m., Saturday, November 17 at St. John’s Cemetery in Portage.
