Donald Kick Obituary

Kick, Donald “Donnie” Charles, 69 of Buckhorn Road, Summerhill Township, died February 19, 2019, as a result of dementia. Born January 22, 1950, he was the son of the late George (Bud) and LaRue (Cook) Kick. He is preceded in death by his parents; sister Sonja (Kick) Johnson and her husband Delbert Johnson; brothers Thomas and Larry Kick; and father-in-law Jason Hess. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Diana (Diney) Hess Kick, whom he married October 14, 1972; daughter Heather married to Jon Ridgway of Marietta, GA, daughter Amy, married to Kevin Tanger of Saxton, PA and son Clint Kick married to Andrea (Gdula) Kick of Summerhill Township, PA and these grandchildren Zane, Hunter, and Grayson Ridgway, Cameron McCabe, Lexie, Cole and Kaden Tanger, and Ella, Lilah, Alayna, Livia, and Alara Kick. Also survived brothers John Kick and his wife Elaine; Matthew Kick and his wife Marsha; Bill Kick and his wife Barbara, all of Portage, PA; sister April and her husband Jack Patterson of Kerrville, TX; mother-in-law Betty Hess of Salix; and numerous nieces and nephews. Don was a 1969 graduate of Forest Hills High School and attended Thaddeus Stevens College, where he studied to become an electrician. He and his brothers worked together to establish Kick Bros. Inc., which, over time, included Kick’s Garage, KB Auto, Kick’s Night & Day, and Kick’s Convenience Store. In the early 1970s, he used his skills to build the family home, which required over two years of hard work and long days and nights. Don was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Since he was a big kid himself, you would often find him outside playing with the kids rather than inside talking with the adults. He was an avid game player and prankster. Competition was his middle name and whether it was horseshoes, corn hole, darts, golf, or cards, he played to win. Laughing the whole time and earning him the nickname the “Knowledge God”, which was given to him by his special daughter-in-law, Andrea. He loved music, especially Elvis Presley, and to play and sing with his guitar. We will always remember his many renditions of House of the Rising Sun and How Much is That Doggie in the Window. He never met a stranger and talked to anyone, anywhere. He always looked forward to hunting and fishing seasons and would be “lost” in the woods for hours or fishing on his little boat with his son. He had no need for a watch, because he was never on time, but he always had gum. Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Friday at the Serenko-Claar Funeral Home, PC, Portage, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday.  Private interment at Mount Union Cemetery to follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. The family would like to thank all our friends, especially our L.B. Water family and the 4th Floor staff at the Cambria Care Home, for their continued support during Don’s long illness.
